Dear Mr Perjanik – you told me during 5th Form English that I could only coast on my brains for so long. That I could get through school without studying, but in my first year at university, I would crash and burn (or words to that effect). I am here to tell you that you were 100% correct. I dropped out of uni in my first year. Still, after a roundabout route, linguistics has become somewhat relevant to my career in IT, and my life in the last 30 years has been excellent. Thank you for your humour. And I can still recite Mark Antony’s speech from Julius Caesar. It’s stuck with me better than nearly anything else from secondary school (although I suppose my English grammar isn’t too bad, after all).
