Ms Leighton if it wasn’t for your initiative and applying for me the AUT Partnership scholarship (which I received for the four years I was at university) I would not be where I am today. You gave me the tools to build and grow as a parent, student, social work practitioner that I am today. I am always and forever indebted to you for never giving up on me!
Your quirky style of teaching History gave me the hunger to know more about being Tangata Whenua/Indigenous and to appreciate the struggles of the emancipated groups! You taught with passion, and you always had a way of keeping me intrigued, specifically your spirituality! I have often wondered what has happened to the “infamous Mr Duffin” – especially when being openly gay at that time was very often frowned upon. So much strength – Mauriora!
